A Look at the top 100 rock songs of All Time

Contrary to popular belief, the term “Sex, Drugs and Rock n Roll” didn’t originate in the 1960’s, but instead, it was Ian Dury who first coined the term in 1977 when he wrote the lyrics for his “Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll" song.

Having said all that, his choice of words was undoubtedly influenced by the way in which rock stars had been living their lives ever since the sixties. Even today, more than 50 years since the birth of rock and roll, rock stars are still a somewhat colorful bunch. Despite their often peculiar lifestyles however, they have and still are providing us with some amazing songs.

We all have different tastes when it comes to music, so of course we all have our own favorite songs and bands. So, what are the top 100 rock songs and what are the best classic rock bands? In an article the length of this one, it would be impossible for me to list the top 100 rock songs, and all the bands that have contributed to the list.

According to one reputable source, Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” is the top rock song ever to be released, and being an avid Pink Floyd fan myself, I would have to agree. On the list I’m referring to, Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog” comes in second, followed by AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long.” In third and fourth place we have “Sweet Emotion” by Aerosmith and “Hotel California” by The Eagles.

To find out what most people think regarding the best bands of all time, I turned to a survey that was done on Facebook, where fans were asked to vote for their favorite band. Not surprisingly, The Beatles stole the top spot, followed by Led Zeppelin in second place, Queen in third place, The Cars in fourth place and Heart in fifth place. Positions 6 to 10 were as follows:

Green Day
Journey
Santana
The Rolling Stones
Motley Crue

Is this an accurate assumption? Definitely not, because as I mentioned earlier, what’s good for one person is not necessarily good for another. I would certainly agree on some of the ratings, but not on all of them. For example, I can’t possibly see how Green Day could rank higher than Pink Floyd or Black Sabbath.

In truth, nobody can really say what the top 100 rock songs 2011 are because everyone has their own personal favorites, and the same applies to the rock bands. Some will say The Beatles were the best band ever, while others will vote for Queen or one of the many others that have come and gone over the years.
